Rule: You can not friend people who would not like to be friended! If you do then your account will be suspended!
To do real-time, fast, private chatting with your friends, go into their profile (hopefully they're online!) and click the "private chat" button in the options section. It will send them a chatting request and if they say yes, then you can do real instant messaging!
If you don't want people adding you as a friend, say that in the"what's in your mind" section of your profile.
In your account, the "Overview" tab is really your newsfeed.
